Mixed Identity Initiative: Virtual Multiracial Affinity Group

Welcome to a place where your multiracial identity is celebrated—not just accepted.

Join our nine-month Virtual Affinity Group Program exclusively designed for mixed-race and multiracial teenagers aged 13-19. Starting in September 2024, this multiracial experience aims to forge deep connections and trust within a community that understands the nuances of being multiracial in America.

Being a teen is hard.

Being a multiracial teen is next-level.

Let us help you navigate the journey.

Build Camaraderie. Establish Trust. Embrace YOUR Identity

Our program isn’t another race relations classroom session—it’s a journey of connection and discovery of multiracial identity. We meet once a month in the evenings (EST) via a secure Zoom room where biracial and multiracial teens can share, learn, and grow among other multiracial people who get it. And while you’re connecting with your peers, we’ve got something for other family members too—special ethnic identity workshops tailored just for them.

Why Choose MIXED?

Forget the traditional classroom setting. Our program is all about:

  • Activities and discussions that are fun and meaningful.
  • A club vibe where you can express yourself freely.
  • Gain insights and validation into your multiracial experiences,

Experience a supportive space to discuss mental health

Led by Hannah Liu, DEI expert and seasoned educator

Hannah Liu, the driving force behind the Mixed Identity Initiative, has dedicated her career to fostering diversity, equality, and inclusion. As a DEI specialist and educator, Hannah’s journey through her own mixed Taiwanese and Jewish heritage has deeply influenced her professional path and personal philosophy.

During her time at Brown University, Hannah connected with fellow multiracial students through affinity groups, discovering a supportive community that shared her experiences. These connections were instrumental in shaping her understanding that one need not choose between aspects of their identity, but rather celebrate the whole.

Hannah furthered her commitment to this cause at Harvard, where she pursued graduate studies in education with a focus on supporting young people in affirming their diverse racial backgrounds. Her academic and professional endeavors have culminated in the creation of the Mixed Identity Initiative, a platform aimed at empowering individuals to honor all parts of their identity.

Why Multiracial Kids Need Affinity Programs

Many times society tries to sort individuals into narrowly defined categories, this puts multiracial teens in a position that can feel both isolating and confusing. Recognizing the distinct experiences and challenges faced by multiracial adolescents, our affinity program is dedicated to creating a supportive environment where these young individuals can explore and affirm their diverse identities. Here are just a few of the reasons why our affinity program is an invaluable resource for multiracial teens

  • Identity Affirmation: Our program validates and affirms the diverse identities of multiracial teens, providing a safe space where their unique experiences and challenges can be understood and supported.
  • Social Connection: We foster a sense of belonging and community, reducing feelings of isolation by connecting multiracial teens with peers who share similar backgrounds and experiences.
  • Cultural Competence: By participating in discussions and activities focused on multiracial experiences, teens develop a deeper understanding of their own cultural identities, which is crucial for personal development.
  • Skill Development: We actively encourage the development of important social and emotional skills through group discussions, conflict-resolution exercises, and collaborative activities.
  • Mental Health Benefits: Active participation can significantly contribute to the mental well-being of multiracial teens by providing a supportive network that understands and shares similar life experiences, which can help reduce stress and anxiety.

Educational Support: We provide a platform to discuss and learn about racial and cultural dynamics in a supportive setting, which can enhance academic motivation and success by addressing and mitigating the effects of racial stressors.
